Vande Bharat Express: Classes, Sleeper Trains and How Booking Works

By · Last reviewed 26 August 2026

Vande Bharat is India's self-propelled intercity trainset, and by August 2026 it runs on more than 80 routes with over 160 services. For most of its history it has been a daytime, seating-only product — but the sleeper version is now genuinely in service, which changes what the name means.

The Two Kinds of Vande Bharat

Chair car — the great majority

Almost every Vande Bharat is a seated day train, built for journeys of roughly four to eight hours. Two classes:

  • CC — Chair Car. Standard air-conditioned seating, three-and-two across.
  • EC — Executive Chair Car. Wider seats two-and-two across, more legroom, and on some rakes rotating seats that face the direction of travel. Noticeably more expensive.

Catering is normally included in the fare, in the manner of Rajdhani and Shatabdi, and can be declined at booking.

Sleeper — new, and still rare

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper entered service on 17 January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya, covering roughly 968 km in about fourteen hours. It carries First AC, 2AC and 3AC, with wider and better-cushioned berths than existing stock, plus reading lights and charging points at each berth.

More are coming — a Bengaluru–Mumbai rake has been in testing and a Delhi–Amritsar service was announced for later in 2026 — but as of August 2026 the sleeper version is very much the exception. If you are looking at a Vande Bharat for an overnight journey, check the class list before assuming berths exist on it.

How Booking Differs

It does not, mechanically. Vande Bharat books through IRCTC like any other train, inside the same 60-day reservation window, subject to the same quotas, the same Tatkal rules and the same chart preparation process. What differs is the experience of trying:

  • Fewer coaches, so less inventory. A sixteen-coach chair-car set holds far fewer passengers than a full-length Mail/Express, and popular routes fill quickly.
  • A smaller waiting list. Less capacity means the queue clears less often. A waitlist number that would comfortably confirm on a Rajdhani may not move here.
  • Higher fares. Particularly Executive Chair Car, where the premium over regular CC is substantial.
  • Cancellations still happen. Which means chart vacancy applies exactly as it does elsewhere.

Getting a Last-Minute Seat

Because capacity is tight, Vande Bharat is a train where checking after chart preparation genuinely pays. When the first chart is drawn — about 10 hours before departure, or by 8 pm the previous night for trains leaving between 5 am and 2 pm — unclaimed quota seats and cancellations are released for current booking at the normal fare.

Check chart vacancy at that point, or seat availability if you are still choosing a date. On a route where the Vande Bharat is full, a Shatabdi or Tejas on the same corridor is often the better answer than waiting.

Is It Worth the Fare?

Honestly, it depends on the route. On corridors where Vande Bharat is meaningfully faster than the alternatives, the time saved usually justifies the premium. On routes where it shares the same path and similar timings as an existing Shatabdi, you are paying mostly for newer interiors. Compare the actual journey duration with trains between stations before deciding — the difference is sometimes an hour, and sometimes twenty minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few services do. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper began running on 17 January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya, with First AC, 2AC and 3AC berths. More routes are planned, but as of August 2026 the overwhelming majority of Vande Bharat services remain seating-only chair car trains.

CC is Chair Car, standard air-conditioned seating arranged three-and-two across. EC is Executive Chair Car, with wider seats two-and-two across and more legroom, and on some rakes seats that rotate to face the direction of travel. EC costs considerably more.

Catering is normally included in the ticket price, as on Rajdhani and Shatabdi services, and can be declined at the time of booking if you would rather not pay for it.

Capacity. A Vande Bharat trainset carries far fewer passengers than a full-length Mail or Express, so popular routes fill quickly and the waiting list clears less often than on a longer train.

Sometimes, and it is worth checking. When the reservation chart is prepared — about 10 hours before departure, or by 8 pm the previous night for morning trains — unclaimed quota seats and cancellations are released for current booking at the ordinary fare.

As of August 2026 Vande Bharat operates on more than 80 routes with over 160 services across the country. The fleet is expanding steadily, so check IRCTC or the National Train Enquiry System for what runs on your route today.
