How to Upgrade a Train Ticket: The Auto Upgradation Scheme Explained
By Lokesh Rathore · Last reviewed 26 August 2026
Indian Railways will move you from Sleeper to 3AC, or 3AC to 2AC, at no extra cost. It happens automatically at chart preparation, it costs nothing, and most passengers never get considered for it because they missed a single checkbox at booking.
What Auto Upgradation Is
When the chart is prepared, the reservation system looks for berths sitting empty in higher classes. Rather than run those coaches half full while a lower class is oversold, it promotes eligible passengers upward — free of charge. Your fare does not change and your PNR stays the same.
The logic is straightforward: an empty 2AC berth earns nothing, and moving a 3AC passenger into it frees a 3AC berth for someone on the waiting list. Everyone gains.
The Box You Have to Tick
On the IRCTC booking page, under Other Preferences, there is an option along the lines of “Consider for Auto Upgradation”. If it is not ticked, you are never in the pool — no matter how many higher-class berths go empty.
It is worth ticking essentially every time. There is no fare risk: if you are upgraded you still pay only what you paid, and if you are not, nothing changes.
How Selection Works
- It runs at chart preparation, alongside waiting-list resolution and RAC confirmation.
- It is automatic. Nobody at the station or on the train can arrange it for you, and no website can influence it. Any service claiming to guarantee an upgrade is selling something it cannot deliver.
- It needs spare capacity in the class above. No empty higher-class berths means no upgrades on that train that day.
- Confirmed and RAC passengers who opted in are the pool it draws from.
How to Tell If You Were Upgraded
Check your PNR status after the chart is prepared. The PNR number stays the same, but the class and coach change — a booking made in S4 might come back as B2. The coach letter is the giveaway: S is Sleeper, B is 3AC, A is 2AC, H is First AC.
Because the class can change after you booked, it is worth checking the chart before you leave for the station rather than walking to the coach printed on your original ticket.
When to Check
Chart preparation timings changed in 2025. For trains departing between 5 am and 2 pm the first chart is drawn by about 8 pm the previous night; for trains departing after 2 pm or before 5 am, about 10 hours before departure. Our chart preparation guide has the detail.
Paid Upgrades Onboard
Auto upgradation is not the only route into a higher class. If berths are genuinely empty after departure, the Travelling Ticket Examiner can allot one against payment of the fare difference plus the applicable charge. This is a different thing entirely — it is a purchase, not a free promotion, and it depends on berths actually being vacant.
If you want to try: find the TTE early in the journey, carry your ticket and photo ID, and ask politely whether anything is free in the class above. Berths left by no-shows are what make this possible, and the same berths are what our chart vacancy checker is built around.
Common Misunderstandings
- “I paid more so I should be upgraded first.” Fare paid is not the criterion. Opting in and available capacity are.
- “Being upgraded means my ticket was cancelled.” It was not. Same PNR, same fare, different coach.
- “I can request an upgrade at the counter.” Not for auto upgradation, which is decided by the system at charting. A paid upgrade onboard is a separate matter.
- “It happens on every train.” Only where higher-class berths are actually free. On a fully booked train, nobody moves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tick the 'Consider for Auto Upgradation' option under Other Preferences when booking on IRCTC. At chart preparation the system moves eligible passengers into empty higher-class berths free of charge. Separately, if berths are empty after departure, the TTE can allot one onboard against payment of the fare difference.
No. It is free. You pay only the fare for the class you originally booked, even if you are moved to 3AC or 2AC, and your PNR number does not change.
Either the option was not ticked at booking, or there were no empty berths in the class above on that train. Selection is automatic at chart preparation and cannot be requested or arranged by anyone.
Check your PNR status after the chart is prepared. The PNR stays the same but the coach and class change. The coach letter tells you: S is Sleeper, B is 3AC, A is 2AC and H is First AC.
Yes, but that is a paid upgrade rather than the free auto upgradation scheme. If berths are genuinely empty the TTE can allot one against the fare difference plus the applicable charge. Approach early in the journey with your ticket and photo ID.
No. If you are upgraded you pay nothing more; if you are not, nothing about your booking changes. The only practical consequence is that your coach may differ from the one on your original ticket, so check the chart before heading to the platform.
