Live Train Running Status is one of the most useful tools for Indian Railway passengers. It allows you to "Spot Your Train" and track its exact location in real-time, saving you from waiting endlessly at the station.

How to Use the Live Train Status Checker?

Checking the current location of your train is extremely simple. Follow this step-by-step process:

Where Live Train Running Status Data Comes From

Indian Railways does not track a train from one single source. The running status you see anywhere online is stitched together from several internal systems, and knowing which one is behind a particular update explains why some trains report their position to the minute while others go quiet for an hour.

  • Control Office Application (COA): Section controllers in each divisional control office log the arrival and departure of every train at reporting stations. This is the oldest and still the most widely available source, and it updates only when a train actually passes a reporting point.
  • Real Time Train Information System (RTIS): Locomotive-mounted satellite devices, built by CRIS in partnership with ISRO, transmit the loco's position roughly every 30 seconds. Trains hauled by an RTIS-fitted loco can be tracked between stations, not just at them.
  • National Train Enquiry System (NTES): The public-facing layer that aggregates the above and publishes the arrival, departure and delay figures that enquiry counters, the 139 helpline and websites all read from.

Because COA-based updates only refresh at reporting stations, a train crossing a long section without a scheduled halt can appear frozen at its last known station for a considerable stretch. That is normal, not a fault.

What the Status Terms Actually Mean

Railway status vocabulary is precise, and the difference between two similar-sounding terms can decide whether you should leave for the station or stay home.

  • Right Time: The train is running within a few minutes of its scheduled timing at the last reported station. It does not guarantee it will still be on time at your station.
  • Late / Delayed: Shown in hours and minutes against the schedule. Delay is measured at the last reporting point and can grow or shrink further down the route.
  • Rescheduled: The railway has formally shifted the train's departure from its origin to a later time, usually because the incoming rake is delayed. Your chart preparation time shifts with it.
  • Diverted: The train is running over an alternate route, typically because of a block or an accident on the booked path. Some scheduled halts may be skipped entirely.
  • Terminated Short of Destination: The train has been ended at an intermediate station and will not complete its advertised run. Passengers booked beyond that point are entitled to a refund for the untravelled portion.
  • Short Origination: The reverse case, where the train starts from an intermediate station instead of its usual origin.
  • Yet to Start: The train has not left its originating station, so no position data exists yet.

Why Trains Run Late on Indian Railways

Delays are rarely random. The recurring causes are well known to anyone who travels the network regularly:

  • Section congestion and precedence: On saturated corridors, slower Mail and Express trains are looped to let Rajdhani, Vande Bharat and Shatabdi services pass. A single precedence can cost 20 to 40 minutes.
  • Winter fog: Between mid-December and late January, dense fog across the northern plains forces drivers to run on caution. Losses of three to ten hours on Delhi-bound long-distance trains are common in this window, and Railways pre-emptively cancels or reschedules some services.
  • Engineering blocks: Doubling, third-line work, electrification and routine track maintenance require planned blocks that eat into running time.
  • Asset failures: Loco failure, hot axle detection, signal or overhead equipment faults, and point failures.
  • Operational incidents: Chain pulling, cattle run-over, trespassing, and weather events such as flooding or landslides on ghat sections.
  • Late primary rake: Most rakes work a return trip. If the train arrived late in the previous direction, it frequently starts late on the next one.

How a Delay Affects Your Chart and PNR

Chart preparation is tied to the train's scheduled departure from its originating station, normally about 10 hours before it, or by 8 pm the previous night for trains leaving between 5 am and 2 pm. For trains leaving very early in the morning, the chart is drawn the previous evening instead. A second and final chart is prepared roughly 30 minutes before departure, and it is between these two charts that a large share of RAC and waiting-list movement happens.

If a train is formally rescheduled, the chart timing moves with the new departure time. If it is merely running late without being rescheduled, the chart is still prepared against the original schedule. This distinction matters if you are on the waiting list and watching for a confirmation.

When It Is Worth Checking

  1. The night before: Confirms the train is not cancelled, diverted or rescheduled.
  2. Four to five hours before your boarding time: Long enough ahead that a large delay still lets you change plans, and late enough that the figure is meaningful.
  3. About an hour before: The delay at the station immediately preceding yours is the single most reliable predictor of your actual boarding time.

One practical rule: read the delay at the last station the train has already crossed, not the delay at its origin. A train that left three hours late may have recovered an hour by the time it reaches you, and long-distance schedules deliberately build in recovery margin on the later legs.

Live Status, PNR Status and Seat Availability Are Different Things

These three are often confused, and each answers a different question:

  • Live running status tells you where the train is and how late it is running.
  • PNR status tells you where your booking stands — confirmed, RAC or waiting list, plus coach and berth once the chart is out.
  • Seat availability tells you what is still bookable on a future date, before you buy a ticket.
