What is Chart Vacancy?

When you book a train ticket on IRCTC, the seat status changes over time. About 4 hours before the train starts from the first station, Indian Railways prepares the final passenger list. This list is called the Reservation Chart.

If some seats are still empty because passengers cancelled their tickets or special quota seats were not used, these empty seats are shown as Chart Vacancy. You can view these empty seats online and book them directly from the ticket counter or mobile app.

How to Check Empty Train Seats Online?

  2. Select your travel date and preferred class (like Sleeper, 3AC, or Chair Car).

Important Terms Made Simple

CNF (Confirmed)

You get a full seat or sleeping berth guaranteed for your entire journey.

RAC (Shared Seat)

You can board the train and get a shared sitting place. If someone cancels, you get a full sleeping berth.

WL (Waiting List)

Your ticket is not confirmed yet. If it stays in WL after the final chart, online tickets are cancelled automatically.

When is the final train chart prepared?
The first reservation chart is prepared exactly 4 hours before the train departure time from its starting station. For early morning trains leaving before 12:00 PM, the chart is usually prepared the previous night.
What happens to unbooked Tatkal seats?
If some Tatkal seats are not booked by passengers, they are automatically transferred to the general waiting list during final chart preparation. This helps standard waiting list tickets get confirmed faster.
Can I travel in train with a Waiting List ticket?
If you booked your ticket online from IRCTC and it remains in Waiting List (WL) after the final chart preparation, it gets cancelled automatically and your money is refunded. You are not allowed to travel inside reserved coaches on an unconfirmed online ticket.
